Auburn, ME – CMCC Men's Basketball continued its strong end to the first semester, putting up its best offensive output of the season in a 103-73 win over Paul Smith's College. It was the Mustangs' tenth straight victory improving them to 11-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play. The hosts had all 15 available players see the court for at least five minutes of action, with five of them scoring in double figures.
Captain Will Duke had 15 points and a game-high six assists. Javion Jacobs put up 15 of his own, Khaden Moore added 11 points, and Creighty Dickson and Sascha Alexeeff each posted 10. Central Maine had 43 points off the bench. E.J. Carter, Luke Jamieson, and Jaden Williams all knocked down three-pointers while Keiontay Marsh and Ryan White had strong all-around games.
Paul Smith's would take the lead three times in a seesaw opening four minutes. Talon Brooks hit a pair of threes, making it 10-9 at the 3:53 mark. Duke hit two of his own from outside early on, giving Central Maine the lead for good. Head coach Dave Gonyea continued to use two sets of five players in the first ten minutes. Alexeeff made his presence felt with a dunk to stretch the lead to 19-12.
A 12-0 run in a span of just 2:12 put some daylight between the sides. J.T. Pound, Jacobs, Moore, and Dickson all scored in the stretch to go up 31-14. Manny Belcher hit a three for the Bobcats to end their scoring drought, but that was followed by another run from the Mustangs, this time for 13 straight points. When the horn sounded to end the first half, CMCC was up 55-29.
There was not much change out of the locker room. The visitors never got back within 20 points, allowing the hosts to send their starters to the bench after adding 16 points in five minutes. Different combinations of players made the most of their extra minutes, but there were some pains that came with the unfamiliarity. Central Maine turned the ball over 13 times in the second half.
Dickson and Duke returned to facilitate things for another five-minute stretch. Williams and Jamieson scored late to push the point total higher, going up by as many as 35 late in the half. It was Carter with a three-pointer in the final minute that got the Mustangs over the century mark on the night.
Paul Smith's had four players of their own in double-digit scoring, including Brooks (14), Yahsiro Hurst Jr. (14), O'neil Mason (11), and Belcher (11). Central Maine continued to flex its might on the boards, outrebounding the Bobcats 41 to 27. The Mustangs put up 60 points in the paint, shot 58.7% from the field, and forced 22 turnovers for an all-around effort.
CMCC next finishes up its stretch of four straight games at home on Saturday, welcoming in another YSCC team from New York in the Word of Life Huskies. The doubleheader gets started with the women's teams tipping off at 4:00 pm before the men's sides play at 6:00 in Auburn.
