Roman Returns to CMCC Basketball as Assistant

Auburn, ME – Central Maine Community College has announced the hiring of alum Zavier Roman as a new assistant coach with the Men's Basketball program ahead of the 2025-26 season.

"Bringing Zavier back to the program he graduated from is a great fit for both him and CM," said athletic director and men's basketball head coach Dave Gonyea. "Z' played three years at CM and served as a team captain. His leadership and dedication to the program is unquestionable. I'm excited to have him back on our bench."

Roman returns to Central Maine having played three seasons for the Mustangs from 2015-18. The Belfast High School product was part of the last men's basketball team to reach the USCAA national tournament in 2016, when CMCC finished the year 22-10. He appeared in 80 games over his three campaigns, ending his career with 136 points and 95 rebounds. The combo guard/forward helped the program to a 61-27 overall record in that span. Roman was named a USCAA Academic All-American in 2018.

Since graduating from CMCC with a degree in Criminal Justice, he has worked six years in law enforcement and is currently the School Resource Officer at nearby Lewiston High School. Roman has also stayed active in basketball, coaching training camps for youth groups in Waldo County. He joins fellow assistants Michael Mercuri, Corey David, and Jared Rubin on Gonyea's coaching staff.

The Mustangs are coming off a 2024-25 campaign that saw the team go 17-13 and reach the semifinals of the Yankee Small College Conference Tournament for the ninth straight season. Men's Basketball opens its campaign on Friday, October 3rd on the road against Crandall University, as part of a three-game road trip through Canada.
