Waterville, ME – CMCC Women's Ice Hockey completed its second season, and first as a member of the IWCHL Adirondack North division, with an 8-0 loss to second-place Colby College at the Jack Kelley Rink on Tuesday night. The shorthanded Mustangs finished their campaign with a 3-11-0 overall record and a 1-9-0 mark in conference play.
The Mules took the lead 4:21 into the first period on a goal by Dede Tindall, but the Mustangs hung with them for the first 15 minutes. That changed with two quick strikes, 13 seconds apart, to end the opening frame. Charlotte Palmby slipped a shot from the right wing under goaltender Jaelyn Poitras' left pad. Lillian Walsh then took advantage of a mistake on a dump-in from the ensuing face-off. The puck popped loose from behind the net, and the Colby forward popped it in before Poitras could react, making it 3-0 after the first.
Avery Taylor scored back-to-back goals in the second period, tallying her second with 1:40 left before the intermission to make it 5-0. The hosts added three more in the third. Carter Williams scored 5:51 into the final frame and Palmby completed a hat trick to cap off the scoring. Her third goal came with just 40 seconds left on the clock to set the 8-0 scoreline.
Central Maine was only able to dress nine skaters due to a suspension to alternate captain Kylie Boardman and injuries to several players. Captain Kylee Spugnardi and defensemen Fiona Landry and Lauren Hanlon carried the bulk of the workload but slumped to their third shutout loss of the campaign after being unable to score against 8-1-0 Colby.
CMCC wraps up the second season for the women's ice hockey program. Spugnardi once again paced the team in scoring with 13 goals and 17 points. The former Red Hornets co-op team product ends her time at Central Maine with 34 goals and 51 career points. Boardman tallied the most assists this season with ten while Landry nipped her for the second-most points on the team with 15. Zoe Trepaney was the highest-scoring freshman with ten points on an even five goals and five assists.
Head coach Drew Lupardi looks to help the team reload heading into its third season of existence with a slew of new recruits. The Mustangs will look to get back on the ice next October prepared for another season in the IWCHL's toughest division.
