Auburn, ME - After a hard loss on Saturday night the Mustangs still controlled their own faith. In order to clinch a 1st round bye for the NECHA playoffs, they would have to win the 2 remaining NECHA games.
The 1st period started of hesitant as both teams didn't want to make an early mistake, however it was the Mustangs with a Gabe Poirier shot on the powerplay that made it 1-0. The second period would consist of chances but great goaltending and defensive commitments kept it 1-0 for a long time. Dartmouth would find the equalizer with about 50 seconds remaining in the 2nd. "Giving up goals in the last 2 minutes of a period is something we can't continue to do, it gives to much momentum to a team going into the lockerroom," said Coach Knoren.
Dartmouth would use the momentum to make it 2-1 in the 3rd period giving the Mustangs a familiar situation to face. Resiliency is what would come next and through hardwork as the Mustangs would score 3 unanswered goals giving them a 4-2 lead. Dartmouth would still net another goal with 6 seconds remaining but it would be enough for the Mustangs to give them the much needed regulation win.
"Good teams find ways to not going on losing streaks, our guys responded and played with their hearts in the 3rd period to pull this much needed win over the line. This is just a special group of men fighting for the same goal," added Coach Knoren.
The Mustangs will be back in action facing Colby College on Wednesday for a 7.20 p.m. puck drop!
