Mustangs Hang 30 on Herons in Regular Season Finale

Portsmouth, NH – The CMCC Baseball team ended the regular season by setting a new season-high for runs in a 30-2 victory against YSCC opponent Great Bay Community College on the road Friday night. Logan Carpenter led the offense with seven RBIs and four runs scored. The Mustangs added 16 runs in the top of the sixth to end the game early and were buoyed by 12 hits to go along with 14 walks and eight hit by pitches.

Jeff Meisner picked up the win for the Mustangs, improving to a 6-1 record in just his fourth start of the campaign. The junior from Natick, MA leads the team in appearances with 12 and is tied with Kyle Delano for the most wins. Carpenter and Lee Robertson also got innings on the mound in relief.

Great Bay actually had the lead after two full innings of play. Central Maine took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brandon Gour scored on a wild pitch by starter Greg Hurlbert. However, the Herons responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Jefferson Raycraft plated Zach Bradford with a line drive into right field. Bradford then made it 2-1 in the second when the catcher scored on a ground ball by Miles Murray that led to an error.

The Mustangs did not collect their first hit until the top of the third when Hayden Durrell singled with a pop fly that dropped over the shortstop's head. That came after Gour had scored for the second time on the day to tie things at 2-2. Durrell scored on Carpenter's first RBI of the day, with a base hit into left. Zac Gorman grounded into a double play but still drove in Garren Post, and Carpenter scored on an error to make it 5-2.

CMCC added five more in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a commanding 14-2 lead. Hurlbert was relieved by Murray on the mound with the GBCC starter issuing seven walks and hitting another four batters. Some of the highlights were a Gorman two-RBI single and Post doubling to right to score Gour for the fourth time. The speedy second baseman also crossed the plate twice more in the sixth inning.

That was when the game got out of hand for the hosts. The Mustangs had 23 at-bats in the inning, as the shorthanded Herons tried to close out the game with outfielders Domenick Johnson and Daniel Ciriello taking turns on the mound. Central Maine scored 16 times in the half inning with seven walks, three HBPs, and two wild pitches being the biggest culprits. Cameron Dostie, Leo Woods, Steven White, and even Meisner all pinch-hit during the longest inning of CMCC's season.

Robertson pitched the final three outs to wrap things up after six innings, striking out three batters to preserve the 30-2 win.

The Mustangs end the regular season with a 23-13 overall record and a 10-5 mark in conference play. They will be the #2 seed in the upcoming YSCC Tournament, which starts on Wednesday, April 30th. CMCC will host #3 York County to start off the double elimination bracket. First pitch is slated for 2 pm.
