Auburn, ME – Central Maine Community College has announced that Fred Wilcox will be the new head coach of the Softball program, taking over the reins ahead of the 2025-26 season.
"We are thrilled to welcome coach Wilcox to the CM family," said athletic director Dave Gonyea. "He brings a wealth of experience both on and off field, as well as the recruiting front. His past record speaks for itself, sending off many players to play in college. I believe this will help us take the next step with our program."
Wilcox brings plenty of coaching experience to the table, working with softball teams for 20 years across various levels. He serves as the co-director for the New England Softball Elite program and coach of the 14U national travel team, finding success in USA Softball tournaments.
Wilcox previously coached the Windham High School Eagles varsity team for three seasons after two years as an assistant and spent four years with the Windham Middle School team. He is also co-owner of The Cages, a 12,000 square foot local sports facility in Gray, ME. His two daughters, Chloe and Ella, both went on to play college softball for the Colby Mules.
Specializing in hitting, catching, and fielding, Wilcox says he is excited to get started and is committed to helping student-athletes find success both on the diamond and in the classroom. He takes over the position from CMCC softball alum and "60 for 60" honoree Megan Larochelle.
"Through my extensive experience, I have developed a strong network within the softball community, which I intend to leverage to recruit and enhance the program at CMCC," said Wilcox. "I am excited to connect with everyone in the program and the school. Go Mustangs!"
Central Maine opens the fall portion of its 2025-26 season on September 7th with a doubleheader against Roxbury Community College. The Mustangs are coming off a second-place finish in the YSCC regular season standings after going 7-5 in conference play. The team posted an 11-16 overall record for the year.
