Augusta, ME – Playing its fourth game in five days, the Mustangs showed early fatigue but turned it on in the second half to clip the Moose in an 87-83 contest at the August Civic Center.
The Moose jumped out to a 12-3 lead early as the visitors couldn't get untracked. UMA's half court zone seemed to prevent the Mustangs from setting up any kind of offense. CM was coming off a poor shooting performance on Sunday. Unfortunately, they carried some of that curse into the contest, as they were hesitant to take open shots. Coach Gonyea went to the bench early running players in and out attempting to keep fresh bodies on the court. Key three's by Luke McCusker keep the Mustangs close. CM went to the locker room down 32-31.
After halftime adjustments, the boys came out on a 10-2 run. After a UMA time out, CM managed to keep the game in check, although the Moose would never go away. Constant full court pressure by CM gave the home team fits.
Coach Gonyea adds, "We needed good bench play tonight and got it. Khalid and Malik came off the bench with quality minutes and between Khalid's quickness and Malik's toughness, both helped us move forward."
"I also have to say the steady play of captain Corey David is one of the keys to our success. He has a ton of pressure put on him, as expectations are high. He keeps his cool and keeps our team focused."
Saikwon Williams led the squad with 16 points and 9 rebounds. David added 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds. Ibn came off the bench to chip in with 12 points and 7 rebounds.
The Mustangs host Unity College Thursday and the University of Maine at Machias on Saturday.
