Auburn, ME – Charles Cedre and Freddy Webb combined for 27 points to lead the Mustangs to a 72-62 win over visiting University of New Brunswick St John in the opening round of the 23rd Can Am basketball tournament held at CM.
The Mustangs struggled in the first half in the defensive end allowing the SeaWolves to penetrate to the hoop creating easy scoring opportunities. Trailing at the half 39-35, the home squad regrouped and came out the second half ready to play. A Levi Lapham dunk welcomed the SeaWolves back on the floor and the Mustangs took off. Tighter defensive play and key shots by Cedre (4-5), and Webb down the stretch allowed the victors to extend at small lead to 10 points and hold it the remainder of the way. Positive contributions went to Cedre with 14 points, and Webb followed with 13 points. Cody Tozier led the rebounding battle with 8 boards to go along with 9 points.
The Mustangs host the St Thomas Tommie's tomorrow at 4pm.
